Resource Persons Training Camp

Several Training programmes to train the resource persons in ecological concerns are organized in all the district of the diocese. The resource person is the one who guides the people of their churches to do ecological activities. They lead the people in the right path so that they can do more ecological related programmes and save the earth. The Diocese takes all the initiatives to organize the training programmes.

Organic farming

Organic farming is one of the ways to save the environment. The Diocese is taking every effort to promote organic farming. Some parishes have taken up organic farming seriously. The parish members are using only organic manures for cultivation. A farmers meeting was organized on 3rd September 2005 at Erikadu near Kottayam. The Rt. Rev. Sam Mathew, former Bishop of Madhya Kerala Diocese inaugurated the meeting. Rev.Thomas K. Oommen presided over the meeting. Mr.Abraham poovathany, Dr. Mathew Koshy Punnackadu, Mr.Varkey Kurian, and Rev.C.J.John also addressed the gathering.

Awareness programmes are organized by organizations such as Sunday school, Laity fellowship, Women’s fellowship and youth movement.

Throw away Plastics

“Throw away Plastics” a bold stand taken by the diocese to avoid the use of throw away plastics like cups, carry bags in the premises of all the Churches. As a model to all the churches, sign board has also been exhibited in the Diocesan office campus for prohibiting the use of throw away plastics in that campus. Such sigh boards are exhibited in most of the parishes in the diocese.

Activities in the Organisational level

The Ecological committee is carrying out awareness programmes in the diocese to propagate the importance of protecting the environment. Famous speakers were invited to take classes on the selected topic.

Rain Water Harvesting

Rain water harvesting pits was dug in 125 parishes during the monsoon season in 2004. The slogan is ‘Not to waste rain water falling in our Church land’. The diocese is encouraging members to construct fibrocement tanks to harvest rain water in all houses so that there won’t be any scarcity for water during the summer time. The church is promoting rain water harvesting to all the members of the parish so that they also won’t suffer due to water scarcity in summer time. It will help the soil to be filled with water. It will be good for the people who are cultivating in their home properties. The Diocese is providing the service of technical experts to those who need it. Rain water harvesting was implemented in CMS LP School, Muhamma, CMS HS Mundakayam and CMS LP School Mallappally.

Diocesan Ecological Convention

A special Session on Ecological concerns in connection with the Diocesan convention was held at Baker compound, Kottayam in the month of January. This is to make the members of the diocese aware about saving the environment. People from all the churches of the diocese attend the meeting. Prominent speakers are invited for the talk.

Interactive Bible Study Programme

Interactive ecological Bible study programmes were conducted as part of the biennium celebrations. All the districts of the diocese are conducting interactive ecological bible study. It will help the diocesan members and the participants to save the earth in biblical manner. Leading eco theologian of Asia are invited to deliver speech. Clergies, Church workers, environmentalists participated in these programmes. It is very interactive and the participants of the interactive bible study programme comments that it is very useful for them.

Environmental Day Celebrations

World Environment day is being celebrated in the month June. All the parishes in the Diocese celebrate with meaningful programmes and seminars to educate the people about different topics on environment. The diocese is celebrating Environmental Day every year. The diocese promotes all the churches in the diocese to organize programmes relating to the environment on the behalf of the Environment day. Environemntal Sunday is also celebrated by the diocese. Special Sermon is prepared by the diocese and it is sent to all the churches in the diocese.

Eco Clubs in Schools

Eco Clubs were formed in all the schools in the Diocese. Different programmes like protest march against the cutting of trees on the roadsides were conducted by the school eco club members. It has brought a lot of influences. Special award, like award from Malayala Manorama for efforts in water conservation, were achieved by some schools in the diocese.

Green Parish Award

Green Parish Award is the award presented to the Green Church by the Diocese. The committee is assigned by the diocese to audit the church’s environmental activieties. The committee will do the audit and find one church as the winner. This motivates all the churches to do more and more ecological activities every year. It also motivates the church which won the Green Parish Award to do more ecology related works. The award is given at the Ecological Convention, a special session of the Diocesan Convention which is organized by the Diocese every year in the month of January.

Green School Awards

It is the award given to the School which acquires the first place in the Green Audit. Green Audit is done by the committee assigned by the diocese. This is conducted every year to find the Green Church. The winner is awarded the Green Parish Award in the month of January every year during the Diocesan Convention. This will motivate the teachers and the students to do eco related programmes in schools and in their homes too.

Eco-Regional Conferences

Regional Conferences are organized in the entire diocese by the Ecological Committees. The main objective of the regional conferences was to propagate the idea of Green Diocese programme of the Synod. The district Chairman leads the conference. It is organized by one church in that region. Eminent speakers are invited to take class on different topics which are related to environment. Clergies and Church committee members of these regions participated in the regional meetings.

District Level work

A clergy is in charge of the eco activities in the pastoral district. The first Tuesday of every month clergies of the pastoral district will meet regularly for evaluating the pastoral work, prayer and for study. The clergy in charge of eco activities will report the activities in the meeting.

Relief and Reconstruction of Tsunami affected Areas

The Diocesan ecological committee has decided to enter into collaboration with the Forest Department of Kerala to cultivate Mangroves and Casuarinas along the coastal areas. This is a part of CSI Synod’s programme to cultivate Mangroves and casuarinas on the coastal belt of Tsunami affected areas. The General Secretary of CSI Synod has appointed Dr. Mathew Koshy Punackadu as the coordinator for this programme in Kerala Region. The project is for five years.

Eco Bible Study programme

As part of the ecology, the Diocesan Ecological committee is arranging Eco-Bible Study programme for the clergy and the Church workers of the Diocese. Prominent speakers from different part of Kerala are invited for delivering the messages. This will help the clergy and the church workers to do and to guide the church members to do ecological actions.

Pilgrimage to Ecological Places

Pilgrimage to ecological places is organized by the Diocesan Ecological Committee members for ecological study. It is organized under the leadership of the diocesan bishop. Every year, a pilgrimage is organized to different ecology related places of Kerala. A group of members are also selected by the diocese to accompany with the ecology committee members in the pilgrimage. It was a pilgrimage to study eco conservation programmes also.

Seminar on Ecological Topics

Diocese organizes Seminars on different topics related to ecology. Seminars are organized at diocesan level, district level and the church level also. Famous speakers from different part of the world are invited to talk on the topic and to have discussions. The diocese will give financial support to the churches to organize the seminars. Delegates from different churches of Madhya Kerala Diocese and from the surrounding areas attend the seminars

Green Diocese Programme

Green Diocese Programme was inaugurated by Rt. Rev. Thomas Samuel on 26 – 01 – 2005 by planting a tree. The diocese is encouraging the churches to grow with the green environment. The diocese is giving all the support to promote the Green Diocese Programme and diocese is organizing a lot of programmes to pass the importance of Green Diocese. This will motivate the members of all the churches to do eco cultivation at their homes also. That will lead to a healthy life of the humans and of the earth too.

Green Audit

Diocese is conducting a green audit programme. A sample questionnaire is prepared and the green audit it conducted with the questionnaire to know how much participation each church gives in ecological activities.” This is conducted every year to find the Green Church. The winner is awarded the Green Parish Award in the month of January every year during the Diocesan Convention

Ecological Sunday

All the Churches in Madhya Kerala Diocese celebrated Ecological Sunday. It is celebrated every year. People from different churches are deputed to all the churches in the diocese for the sermon. Special sermon is prepared by the diocese for the ecology Sunday. Special offerings are collected on that Sunday to support the ecological works done by the diocese. All the churches organize variety programmes related to the environment. The clergy in charge of the church will lead all the meetings.
